has over 15 years of experience in the public school setting, offering behavioral consultation and social skills counseling to children with autism, ADHD, and emotional/behavioral difficulties. She aims to help children express their feelings and problem solve effectively. She is a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology and a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Karla Gutierrez, LPC-Associate

Karla works with adults as well as children of all ages and is currently pursuing advanced training in play therapy. As an LPC-Associate she works under the supervision of Erika Willis, LPC-S. Her practice draws from a range of therapeutic methods, including Person-Centered Therapy, Play Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, tailored to meet each client’s unique needs and goals. Karla has also been training for specializing in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). She is adept at helping people address anxiety, or depression, learning to manage the pressures life can bring. Why Karla? Because her approach is exceptional. Dedicated to supporting individuals on their healing journeys, her approach is rooted in creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients feel empowered to explore and express their true selves.
Kathrine Parnell, LCSW, ASDCS
Founder/Executive Director
After graduating from California State University, Bakersfield with her Masters Degree in Social Work, Kathrine has worked with children and families in the foster care and adoption setting. She has extensive professional and personal experience helping individuals on the autism spectrum. She has also spent several years working with individuals across the age spectrum in the medical setting, including working as a neuro-oncology therapist at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. She is a skilled marriage therapist certified in the Gottman approach, and has assisted hundreds of couples in strengthening their relationships. Kathrine is also an author, check out her book HERE.

I am dedicated to providing compassionate, client-centered care that supports emotional wellness and personal growth. My approach is grounded in empathy, professionalism, and individualized support. I believe in creating a safe, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to work toward meaningful change.
I utilize evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Person-Centered Therapy, and psychoeducation to help clients build coping skills, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen overall functioning. I value collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and meeting clients where they are in their journey.
My goal is to support each client with compassion while encouraging accountability, resilience, and long-term growth.

I work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families navigating challenges with neurodivergence, attachment, behavior, and relationships. I believe healing happens in connection and aim to create a space where you feel seen, safe, and understood. Trained in Play Therapy, Theraplay, and the Gottman Method, I use attachment-based and Emotion-Focused approaches to help strengthen communication, repair trust, and foster meaningful growth.
I help children, teens, adults, couples, and families find new ways to connect and communicate. Together we’ll work through challenges with neurodivergence, attachment, behavior, or relationships using Play Therapy, Theraplay, the Gottman Method, and attachment-based approaches to foster healing and growth.

Michelle specializes in working with trauma, grief, parenting, anxiety, depression, marital conflict, divorce, family conflict, spiritual counseling, intellectual and developmental disabilities, school issues, women’s Issues, and career counseling. Michelle is licensed as a clinical supervisor and is the clinical director of the Clear Lake office of A New View Counseling and Psychological Services. She is passionate about supporting individuals in finding their unique path to healing, without judgment or imposing personal values. She integrates lived experience, ongoing education and clinical and spiritual perspectives as a wholistic approach to enhance mental health and wellness. Michelle counts it a privilege to connect with people who may be experiencing emotional upheaval that leads to an inability to cope with daily life demands. She genuinely believes that at the core of every human being there is strength that can overcome every difficult and challenging life circumstance, and looks forward to meeting you to help with yours.

Penny Sweeney, MA, is a highly experienced Special Educator with over 20 years in the fields of mental health and special education. As our Executive Function Specialist, Penny specializes in helping individuals develop essential cognitive and organizational skills. She offers a range of services, including Parent Coaching, social skills education, and Executive Function coaching, designed to enhance time management, emotional regulation, and problem-solving abilities. Penny’s expertise, coupled with her compassionate approach, makes her an invaluable asset in empowering clients to reach their goals.
Valerie Olvera, LPC

Valerie is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Associate, supervised by Jill Niemstchk. She is a trauma-informed therapist with extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. Her background in supporting children and families within the foster care system has shaped her understanding of the vital role family plays in the therapy process. Valerie specializes in complex trauma, neurodivergence, relationship challenges, depression, and anxiety.
She utilizes an eclectic approach, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Person-Centered Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Somatic Experiencing.
Valerie takes a compassionate, collaborative approach to therapy, recognizing the unique, whole individual behind each case. Valerie’s culturally informed, holistic perspective moves beyond traditional talk therapy to offer a more comprehensive, personalized approach.

- We accept most private insurance plans. We are not in network with any Medicaid plans.
- Self-pay rates vary based on the service provided (therapy, testing, consultation, workshops, groups) and the provider (therapist, intern, educator).
- We offer reduced-rate self-pay options and pro-bono consultations for those on a limited budget.
- Payment is due at the time of the appointment and can be made in cash, checks, or credit cards.
- Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance to avoid a fee. Last-minute cancellations and missed appointments will be assessed a fee.

Health Care Records
Clients may request a copy of their health care records by submitting a written request to our office. Requests can be made by contacting our administrative team at clearlakeintake@anewviewcounseling.net. Requests will be processed in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
